What to do for fun

Big bubbles

Mix 1 cup Dawn dishwashing detergent and one gallon of water. If the air is very dry and hot add 1 tablespoon of glycerin. Glycerin can be purchased at drug stores. Other brands of dish detergent can be used but the best amount to use may vary. According to the book The Spinning Blackboard and Other Dynamic Experiments on Force and Motion, mixing up the solution a day or more ahead of time gives better results.

Bend a wire coathanger into a circle leaving the hook part sticking out as a handle. Wrap the wire circle with closely spaced windings of yarn. Put the solution into a shallow tray which is large enough to allow the entire loop to be submerged at once. Lift the loop from the tray by tilting one edge up until the loop is vertical and immediately pull the loop through the air. After the bubble has formed into a long bag shape, twist and pull the loop to  free the bubble. When you are done save the solution for next time or use it for dishwashing.
