newpaper hat
A hat can be made by folding a full size sheet of newspaper.
With the folded edge at the top,
fold down the top corners so that
they meet at the center.
Then fold down the top.
Fold up the bottom edge of one
layer.
Fold up the double layer section
that was created by the last fold.
Turn the paper over and fold the
left side toward the center.
Do the same with the right edge.
Fold up the bottom edge to make
a crease where the dotted line
is.
Fold up and tuck the bottom edge
in behind the hat's cuff.
Fold down the front corner and
tuck it in behind the cuff.
If you like, fold down the back
corner and tuck it in behind
the cuff.
This hat could also be made out of cloth. Using a needle
and thread, sew a couple of stitches wherever necessary
to be sure the hat keeps its shape. Your name or other
decorations could be added with permanent markers, fabric
paint, ball point pen or crayon. Crayon designs can be made
to last longer by heating the finished design to melt the
wax into the fabric. Place a scrap sheet of paper on both
sides of the cloth and press with a hot iron without sliding
the iron. Hold the iron in place just long enough to melt
the crayon.
surprise
You can make a device that will startle
someone. Bend a butterfly paperclip as
shown to make a modified U shape frame.
Or use any wire available to produce a
similar or 'functionally equivalent'
shape [I like phrases like that].
Add two small rubber bands and a small
trombone shaped paper clip. Or use a
single rubber band in the place of the
two small ones.
For thicker rubber bands
use heavier wire to make the modified
U shape frame. Perhaps you could use
wire from a coathanger. It can be cut
to length by bending sharply one way
then the other, back and forth until
it breaks. That works well if you have a pair of pliers
to do the bending. Turn the trombone clip over and over
to wind up the band. Hold the clip as you place the whole
thing under a book or some such innocent looking object.
