spool stunt
If you have an empty adhesive tape spool or similar spool,
cut a strip of paper narrow enough to wind on the spool
and about 3 feet long. Or use string. Tape one end to the
spool and wind it on. Set the spool on edge and pull on
the strip. By changing the angle to horizontal that you
pull the tape, you can control which of three ways the
spool will move.
A low angle causes the spool to roll
toward you winding up the strip.
A high angle unrolls the
strip. At a certain angle in
between the roll will slide
without turning.
The point of contact of the spool with the surface
can be considered the fulcrum of a lever. The lever
passes through the point of contact of the straight
section of strip and the spool. The lever pivots about
the fulcrum. The direction of rotation is determined
by which side of the lever the paper strip is on.
