Place a coin in a shallow bowl or
pan so that the coin is just
visible when you look above the
side of the pan. Move back just
enough so that the coin is
hidden by the pan's edge.
Pour water into the bowl and
the coin becomes visible.
When light passes from water to
air, its direction of travel
changes. This changing of
direction is called refraction.
