sound guide

Tie two pieces of string each about 18 inches long to the long edge of a metal coathanger. One should be attached near each end of the long edge of the hanger. Hang the coathanger by the strings so the long edge is horizontal and the hook is down. Hold a string end in each hand so the string end is over the tip of the index finger and held in place by the thumb. Put the tips of the index fingers into the ears. Let the hanger bump gently against a metal object. Try the same thing with a large spoon suspended at its balance point by tying the center of a 2 foot long string to the spoon's handle. The sound is greatly amplified, especially the lower tones. The effect is similar to a large bell or gong.

Also try using very thin wire instead of string. Tie the wire ends together to make a loop which is placed over the head. Use the fingertips as before to hold the wire at the entrance to the ear canal. Never put anything smaller than a fingertip into the ear canal.
