Fold a double sheet of newspaper several times so that it is
about 5 by 5 inches. There should be no wrinkles except at the
corners and edges. Soak it with water. Put about a tablespoon
of water in a tin can. A can with corrugations is better
because it is more crush resistant. Heat the can on a stove. Put
the folded newspaper over the can. Let the water boil a couple
of minutes. Put on two long oven mittens. There will be
boiling water spilling. Place a large, flat dinner plate upside
down on top of the newspaper. Grab the can and the plate and
turn them both over while holding them together. Push the can
against the paper for perhaps 10 seconds.
The can will be stuck to the newspaper and plate. As the can
cools the force holding them together increases. Run cold
water over the can to speed the cooling process. The force
is so great that the can is nearly crushed.
Another way to do this is to fold a 4 by 4 inch piece of
newspaper into a strip about 1 by 4 inches. Light one end
of the strip and drop it into the empty can. When the flame
has heated the air in the can to the max, put the soggy,
folded newspaper over the can and continue from there.
