There are a dozen or so possible ways that our lives can be severely disrupted. There are the inevitable ones of illness and infirmary from the aging processes. There's the obvious possibilities of an automobile accident, a house fire, or a slip-and-fall. There are the low probability events such as being hit by lightning and etc. And there are the big, dramatic, widespread catastrophies such as epidemic, nuclear war, meteor impact, and the list goes on. A person could get depressed or anxiety stressed thinking about it. But why not be practical and a little creative about it and enjoy doing what you can to avoid or lessen as many of the possible unpleasant outcomes as seems practical. Becoming prepared can be a sort of hobby. It's interesting. It's doing something for yourself. It's likely to have very large benefits. Delaying loosing your mental abilities and physical abilities is a huge benefit.

Sure, chances are, whatever you do to prepare for a meteor impacted, for instance, will never do you any good. A million to one says you'll be dead centuries before a devastating meteor strikes the earth. But you can do things to prepare for a interruption in the food supply, whatever the cause. You can do things to make life a little easier if the power grid goes down, whatever the cause. Those things could happen from a severe storm, a severe epidemic, a war - events difficult to assign a probability to.

It not difficult to become at least partly prepared. And you can enjoy doing it. It can felt as something to be proud of, something of value that could make your life much more pleasant. You can think of it as a hobby, as a challenge that your good judgement has caused you to advantage yourself with.

Shortages of food and no electricity could be caused by little known or unsuspected factors. There's the possibility of a huge release of methane gas from the ocean floor caused by earthquake. The resulting fires could darken the sky world wide enough to cause crop failures. Or the sun's output could change and affect food production. Some cataclysmic astronomical event could irradiate us and kill and injure enough people to swamp civilization's ability to carry on its normal functions. No one knows the probability of those things happening. No one can know what the chances are of an unkown event causing power failure, food shortages or other serious disruptions. Easy, simple preparations such as having a couple of months' worth of food, could make life a lot more pleasant. There are many fairly easy ways to make yourself more able to live well during a disruption. And if you can be a little creative and enjoy the process of preparing, that enjoyment makes your life better now.

You can include in your empowering endeavors, if you wish, healthy choices about diet, exercise, and other health related matters. You can choose to lessen, avoid, or delay dozens of debilities related to diabetes and other largely conrollable illnesses. Can you enjoy passing on that big piece of chocolate cake with sugar frosting 3/8 of an inch thick? I can. Sure, I would enjoy that cake. Sure, the pleasure I feel from passing up the cake is less intense than the 2 minutes of pleasure while eating the cake. But if I don't eat the cake, I get to avoid the unpleasant long term consequences of eating the cake. I get to enjoy the respect I give myself for passing up the cake. I get to enjoy my good health and all the pleasures that good health enables. I'll go with the possibility that I will enjoy my life more without the cake.

And I'll take the pleasure from preparing for other disasters. I have a stock of food, items to deal with no electricity, extra clothing and blankets and other preparations. I'll never be as prepared as I would like to be. But I have enjoyed the progress I have made. And I'll enjoy becoming more prepared and more enabled.

Here's a list of possible items that could be helpful. In some cases, online sources for the items are included. Make your own decision about what is practical. Everybody's circumstances are different. For example, I live in a rural area, for me, gardening is a way to be at least partially self sufficent for food, gardening is a way to maintain physical ability through exercise, and gardening encourages me to eat a more healthful diet. So, the list contains garden related items such as hoes and hoses.
